Textile Artist

Kay grew up in New Zealand, began quilting in the USA and lived in many countries before moving to Australia in 2002.

Pictorial quilts is her main body of work, - she finds so much to create just by looking at the world around her. Her quilts are often intricately realistic, and typically require a lot of research. She also finds that the perception and acceptance of form and colour is strengthened with a foundation in reality, even for her contemporary work.

Kay has enjoyed exhibiting her quilts since the very beginning, and has received over a hundred awards and prizes from exhibitions and quilt shows in some 10 major countries worldwide.

After Kay’s many years of teaching she completed a series of 6 teaching DVDs, with over 8 hours of demonstrations and explanations of her techniques (www.kayhaerland.com)

Her quilt A Different View” won Viewers’ Choice and Pictorial 1st Prize in the 2007 Sydney show, as well as “Best Innovative Machine Workmanship in the World Quilt Competition in 2008.

Her quilt ‘Under The Canopy’ won ‘Best of Show’ at the 2010 NSW Quilt Show in Sydney and the ‘Bernina National Best of Australia‘ award for 2010.
